Australian startup UCOT wins $4 million in financing through counter-products based on blockchain-based traceability

Since its inception in 1983, the “3·15 International Consumer Rights Day” has marked 35 years of global awareness around consumer protection. Despite government efforts to regulate and combat counterfeit goods, the issue remains a significant challenge in China, with fake products flooding the market and even anti-counterfeit labels being easily forged. Although completely eradicating counterfeits is still difficult, a Sydney-based company called UCOT is offering an innovative solution through blockchain technology. UCOT aims to revolutionize product traceability by embedding a unique digital identity chip into product packaging, enabling real-time tracking of the entire logistics chain. Every stage of a product’s journey—from production to consumption—is recorded on the blockchain, ensuring data integrity and immutability. This not only enhances transparency but also empowers consumers by giving them direct access to supply chain information. Unlike traditional methods that require scanning at various points, UCOT automatically detects if a product has been opened, alerting the end user instantly. For temperature-sensitive goods like meat, blockchain ensures real-time monitoring of environmental conditions. If the required temperature isn’t maintained during transport, the system alerts all parties involved, from suppliers to recipients, preventing spoilage and ensuring product safety. Founded by John Baird, a former vice president of a Swiss bank and chief technology officer at Deutsche Bank, UCOT has raised $4 million through token sales, supported by investors like CollinStar and Sapien Ventures. The startup has also partnered with leading Australian universities, including the University of New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney, to develop advanced blockchain and 5G IoT-enabled sensors. Currently, UCOT has signed memorandums of understanding with several governments and companies, exploring opportunities to help nations in South America protect their supply chains. According to OECD and National Customs Organization data, China has consistently ranked first in the number of counterfeit goods seized since 2011. A well-known example is Ma Dad, who was once mocked by Forbes for building a “200 billion empire on fakes.” He famously stated, “Destined to bear this kind of grievance, this responsibility… can only recognize it and solve it.” Recently, Alibaba’s Tmall International and Rookie Logistics announced the full implementation of blockchain technology to track and verify cross-border imports, effectively giving each product a “digital identity card” for consumers to check. Meanwhile, JD.com launched its AI Catapult Accelerator (AICA) project, supporting blockchain startups. As more major companies adopt blockchain for traceability, the focus is no longer just on protecting consumer rights or corporate interests—it’s also about building trust, enhancing brand reputation, and strengthening public confidence. With its growing influence, blockchain traceability is becoming a crucial component of future e-commerce, setting a new standard for transparency and accountability in the digital age.
