Editor Yang Xiaohua, editorial editor of China Culture News: The fission of aesthetics in the new media environment

On December 22nd, the 4th National Congress of the Chinese Opera Performance Association and the first Chinese Opera Performance Art event were held in Anqing, hosted by the Chinese Opera Performance Society and the Yixiu District People’s Government of Anqing. The event was organized by Digital World (Beijing) Technology & Culture Co., Ltd., and the VR Industry Summit Forum took place during the gathering. VR Network was invited as a special media partner and actively participated in the discussions. The forum centered on the integration of traditional Chinese opera with modern technology, particularly focusing on how virtual reality (VR) can revolutionize the way opera is experienced and preserved. It aimed to explore new creative directions for Chinese opera performance, pushing the boundaries of both art and technology. The discussions highlighted the potential of VR to expand the application fields of modern science and redefine the future of cultural expression. Yang Xiaohua, Editor-in-Chief of China Cultural News, delivered a speech at the forum. He emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration between digital innovation and traditional art, noting that Anqing's selection as the venue reflected the government's forward-thinking approach. He also discussed the evolving relationship between media and aesthetics in the digital age, highlighting the transformative power of VR technology. He pointed out that VR, once considered a distant dream, is now rapidly becoming part of everyday life. With global investments reaching over $90 billion in 2017, VR is reshaping how people interact with culture and art. Opera, he argued, represents the pinnacle of Chinese aesthetics, encapsulating centuries of artistic achievement. As such, it has the potential to be reimagined and reinvigorated through digital tools like VR. In his speech, Yang also referenced the 19th Party Congress, where the concept of “beauty” was formally recognized as an important national goal. This shift signals a deeper cultural and political commitment to aesthetic development. He noted that the liberation of aesthetics is essential for societal progress, especially in the digital era, where media plays a crucial role in shaping human perception and experience. Drawing from Marshall McLuhan’s theories, Yang explained how each media revolution alters the way humans perceive the world. From oral traditions to print, and now to VR, the evolution of media has continuously reshaped our senses and understanding of reality. He suggested that VR could bring us back to a more immersive, tribal-like experience, rekindling the emotional and spiritual connections that have been lost in the age of text and screens. He concluded by expressing optimism about the future of opera in the digital age. While challenges exist, especially in terms of technological development compared to the West, he believed that the integration of VR and opera could lead to a new form of cultural expression. He quoted Pico della Mirandola’s "On Human Dignity," emphasizing that humans are not bound by fate but are creators of their own destiny. In this sense, opera, like all art, holds the power to inspire, transform, and elevate the human spirit. The summit brought together leaders from the Ministry of Culture, local governments, universities, and industry experts. Attendees included Wang Xuan, President of Digital World; He Yimin, CEO of Digital World; Liu Yong, CEO of VR Virtual Reality; Zuo Houchao, Deputy Director of the New Media Department at China Intercontinental Communication Center; and many other influential figures in the tech and cultural sectors. More than 50 theater professionals also joined the event, discussing the future of opera and VR. As part of the event, 14 renowned opera masters performed a special show in Anqing, reminding everyone of the original purpose of art—to connect with the people and touch the heart.
