Give you color to make you look good-COOLERMASTER Cooler Master Ice B240 RGB water cooler out of the box

After receiving my AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X, I was faced with a significant challenge due to the TT 360mm radiator being too long to fit into my beloved INWIN101 case.

Frustrated, I began searching for alternatives, as the RGB-lit options I tried were either too costly or impractical. Despite the attractive RGB effects, the higher price tag of some models made me reconsider.

To provide a bit of context, RGB lighting in PC components typically falls into two categories: those that allow color customization and those that don’t. Most RGB devices offer customizable colors and can be categorized based on whether they come with a controller or not. Devices with controllers offer more flexibility, allowing users to adjust lighting effects independently of the motherboard. On the other hand, devices without controllers rely on the motherboard's RGB control unit, enabling synchronized effects across compatible components.

Major motherboard manufacturers like ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte all have their own RGB systems, but these often use a standardized 4-pin 5050 interface. For synchronization purposes, it’s best to choose RGB devices that support this interface.

When comparing options like the Thermaltake and Corsair RGB radiators, I preferred the latter for its ability to sync with the motherboard, saving space and simplifying cable management. However, the higher price point of Corsair’s offerings led me to explore alternatives like the Cooler Master Ice God B240 RGB.

The Ice God B240 RGB is essentially an upgraded version of the original Ice God B240, which came with red lighting and offered excellent performance at a reasonable price. The RGB version supports the 5050 interface and offers 16.7 million color options, providing true RGB functionality. However, unlike Thermaltake’s Marquee feature, the fans on the Ice God B240 RGB can only display one color at a time.

In terms of accessories, the Ice God B240 RGB includes two RGB fans and an RGB-enabled cold plate. Each fan has both a 4-pin PWM line for speed control and a 5050 RGB control line. Similarly, the cold plate also features two cables for connecting to the motherboard.

The package also includes brackets for both Intel and AMD platforms, along with a tool-free fan mounting bracket. For users who may not have a 5050 interface on their motherboard, the cooler comes equipped with a dedicated RGB controller.

Although the radiator doesn’t come with native support for thread ripping, the online store provides optional kits that can be purchased separately.

I tested the radiator on an ASUS Zenith Extreme motherboard paired with the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and Zhiqi Trident Z RGB memory. The AURA SYNC system worked flawlessly, offering numerous lighting effects that were visually stunning.

Thermal performance was another highlight. After testing the Ice God B240 RGB on the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X running at 4.0GHz, I was pleasantly surprised by its cooling efficiency. While it didn’t quite match the 360mm radiator, it performed admirably, especially considering the different test environments and BIOS updates.

Overall, the Ice God B240 RGB is a solid choice for anyone looking to add RGB flair to their build while maintaining strong cooling performance. Stay tuned for my upcoming review of a new graphics card and the Vega test. Thanks for reading, and feel free to share your thoughts!
