New portable instrument for efficient sequencing of the human genome

The latest issue of the British journal *Nature Biotechnology* highlights a groundbreaking development: an international team has successfully sequenced a complete human genome using a portable, phone-sized genetic sequencing device. This innovation marks a significant milestone, as it dramatically lowers the barriers to accessing gene sequencing technology in both research and clinical settings. Genome sequencing was once a monumental challenge. The first human genome map, completed in 2003, took over a decade and cost approximately $3 billion, involving scientists from around the world. Since then, researchers have continuously worked to develop faster and more affordable methods. Today, that vision is becoming a reality. Researchers from institutions like the University of East Anglia have demonstrated that a complete human genome can be sequenced using a compact device called MinION. Unlike traditional sequencing methods, which produce short fragments that are difficult to assemble, MinION can read much longer sequences—up to 8,000 times longer than conventional techniques. This advancement significantly simplifies the process of reconstructing a full genome from individual sequence reads. In a recent statement, the University of East Anglia emphasized that this breakthrough allows for genome sequencing using a device no larger than a mobile phone, at a cost of just $1,000. One of the study’s authors, Dr. Justin O’Grady, believes this technology could revolutionize personalized medicine.
