The battery A is a combustion caused by a problem that the negative electrode plate is pressed; and the battery B is a battery short circuit caused by the burr generated by the ultrasonic welding because the negative electrode copper foil at the positive electrode end is melted.

At the request of Samsung, UL Company conducted a phased inspection of the batteries of Company A and Company B. For Company A, assembly and process problems and design issues cross-over. Through on-site sample disassembly, CT scanning and battery splitting, it was found that the corner of the battery isolation film was repeatedly deformed, and the internal short circuit appeared in the upper right corner of the battery. In design, the thinning of the isolation film is also a possible cause of failure. For Company B, through dismantling on-site samples, systematic analysis, and analysis of battery safety boundary characteristics, it was found that the internal charging of the battery was uneven and short-circuited. There was a lack of insulating tape on the cathode, poor alignment of the insulating film, and burrs on the solder joint of the tab. Such defects are not related to device incompatibility. In summary, battery design and manufacturing issues have caused field failures in Note 7 devices.

Battery A: The battery corner extrusion deformation touches the cathode and causes a short circuit. It is speculated that the design problem of the battery bag (housing) causes different capacitances, uneven heating, and short-circuited corner deformation.

Battery B: The battery anode has design defects and defects at the solder joint, causing the anode and cathode to be short-circuited. Some batteries have also been found to have unprotected insulating tape on the anode, which exacerbates battery problems.

TUV tested the battery production environment, inspection procedures, battery size, and battery safety status in Samsung's multiple supply chains and production lines and said that no problems were found. A sample of 500 batteries in the supply chain of China, Vietnam and South Korea and 150 samples in the transportation process passed the TUV quality test.

At the end of the conference, Gao Dongzhen said: I admit that Note 7 burned down on the battery and was deeply saddened by the lack of a series of impacts on Note 7 before finalizing the design issue. Gao Dongzhen said that Samsung Electronics will pay more attention to quality control and other issues in the future and build a quality first management system. In order to avoid similar problems, an expert advisory group from industry academics was formed. In the coming days, eight-point safety testing and battery safety design standards are proposed for battery safety standards, and product hardware design improvement standards and software security algorithms are optimized. Gao Zhendong expressed his hope to use this as an opportunity to enhance the safety of lithium batteries in the industry.
