Hitachi develops technology to compensate for internal voltage drop in LSI

Hitachi and Renesas Technology jointly developed a technology to compensate for the voltage drop in the LSI loop block using an auxiliary power supply, and announced details on the 2008 Symposium on VLSI Circuits held in Honolulu, USA on June 18-20, 2008. .

In general, in the vicinity of a circuit block having a large workload, it is easy to cause a large drop in the voltage within the power supply line, resulting in unstable LSI operation. To solve this problem, it is usually a slight increase in the power supply voltage to leave room for it. However, this hinders the low voltage of the LSI.

This time, an on-chip digital voltmeter is used in the circuit block to detect the voltage drop, and the circuit block is connected to an auxiliary power supply other than the ordinary power supply system. The effect confirmed by the test chip based on the 65nm process technology shows that the voltage drop inside the LSI can be reduced by 40mV by using the auxiliary power supply. As a result, the power supply voltage of 1V can be reduced to 0.96V.

Since the auxiliary power supply can supply only the necessary circuit blocks, the lower wiring can be thinner. The utilization efficiency of the wiring is higher than that of the method of thickening the upper power supply wiring to suppress the voltage drop. The two companies strive to bring the technology to a practical level in 2010.
