How to Choose a Good LED Lamp?

Release date: November 1, 2017 Source: Foreign Station Share:

With so many different prices and claims about quality in the LED lighting market, it can be difficult for an average consumer to determine which lamps are truly good. The quality of LED lamps largely depends on several key factors that you should consider when making a purchase.

1. Lumen Maintenance (Light Decay): A high-quality LED lamp should have a light decay of less than 30% after 25,000 hours of use. This is mainly influenced by the quality of the light source and the heat dissipation design. High-power foreign-packaged LEDs, such as CREE, tend to perform better in terms of lumen maintenance compared to domestic ones. As a buyer, you may not see the difference directly, but the price can give you a hint. If you're looking for a better product, make sure the manufacturer provides clear information about the light source used.

2. Luminous Efficacy: Measured in lumens per watt (lm/W), this reflects how efficiently the lamp uses energy. Higher efficacy means more light output with less power consumption. While current LED efficacy is comparable to compact fluorescent lamps, advancements like CREE's 186 lm/W LED show the potential for even greater efficiency in the future.

3. Light Source Type: LED lamps typically use high-power LEDs, which are more expensive but offer better performance. On the other hand, cheaper options like "straw hat" or "piranha" type LEDs are not suitable for long-term lighting applications due to their lower durability and light output.

4. Driver Quality: The driver is a crucial component that ensures the longevity of the lamp. A good driver can significantly extend the life of the LED. Poor drivers, especially low-cost constant-voltage models, can shorten the lifespan of the lamp. Look for manufacturers who offer long-term warranties, as this often indicates confidence in the product’s quality.

When choosing an LED lamp, consider your needs first—whether you want a high-end, mid-range, or budget-friendly option. Evaluate the lamp based on:

  • Chip Type: The most advanced chips include CREE, Puri, and others from Japan and South Korea. These offer better performance but come at a higher cost.
  • Light Decay: This is closely related to both the chip packaging and the lamp’s heat dissipation system.
  • Lumen Output: For indoor lighting, a range of 80-90 lm/W is ideal and technologically mature.
  • Color Temperature: Choose based on your preference—warm, neutral, or cool white.
  • Driver Quality: Most drivers only last about 2 years, so it's important to choose a reliable one to ensure long-term performance.
