For example, a 100 Ω resistor with a 5% tolerance can have an actual resistance ranging from 95 Ω to 105 Ω. Common tolerance levels include 1%, 2%, 5%, and 10%.
To standardize resistor values, manufacturers follow specific series such as E6, E12, E24, E48, E96, and E192. These series ensure that resistors are available in practical values that cover a wide range of applications. The higher the number of values in a series, the smaller the tolerance, allowing for more precise resistance selection.
In addition to resistance value and tolerance, the power rating of a resistor is also important. The rated power indicates the maximum amount of power the resistor can dissipate without being damaged. Power dissipation is calculated using the formula P = V²/R or P = I²R, where P is power, V is voltage, I is current, and R is resistance. When selecting a resistor, it's advisable to choose one with a power rating at least 1.5 to 2 times the expected power consumption to ensure long-term reliability.
Resistors are often marked with color bands to indicate their resistance value and tolerance. A four-band resistor typically has two significant digits, a multiplier, and a tolerance band. For example, a resistor with red, violet, yellow, and silver bands would have a resistance of 270,000 Ω (270 kΩ) with a tolerance of ±10%. Three-band resistors usually lack a tolerance band and have a default tolerance of ±20%.
In circuit diagrams, resistors are represented by specific symbols, and their power ratings are often indicated with additional markings. Proper labeling and placement of resistors in a circuit are essential for easy identification and troubleshooting.
When working with resistors, it's important to select the right type based on the circuit requirements. For general-purpose use, carbon film resistors with 10% or 20% tolerance are commonly used. For precision applications, metal film or wirewound resistors with tighter tolerances may be necessary. Always verify the resistance value before installing a resistor using a multimeter, and ensure that the resistor's markings are clearly visible for future reference.
