On September 16, 2008, at the annual meeting of the American Lighting Association in Washington, the results of the sixth edition of the Lighting for Tomorrow contest were announced. The competition attracted a large number of new designs in the field of energy-saving lighting, including 56 semiconductor lighting modules and 40 compact fluorescent tube modules. The judges judged the participating lamps in terms of color performance, light quantity and distribution, innovation and practicality. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate the development of the household energy-saving lighting market and increase the market acceptance and recognition of energy-saving lighting products.
Thirty-two companies submitted LED entries, of which three companies became winners in each of the recent application categories. Under-cabinet light fixture: Kichler's cabinet light Design Pro series; portable desk lamp/task lighting: Luximo's Cylindrium design; downlight: Cree's LR4 downlight.

The Tomorrow's Light Contest, which began in 2002, was co-hosted by the American Lighting Association, the US Department of Energy (DOE), and the Consortium for Energy Efficiency. More than 24 national energy conservation organizations supported and participated in the competition.
