With the finalization of the 3GPP 5G Phase 1 standard, the global stage for 5G pre-commercial deployment has officially opened. At the 2018 Mobile World Congress (MWC), one of the most anticipated events in the telecom industry, major players showcased their latest 5G strategies and innovations, signaling a new era of wireless connectivity.
Ziguang Zhanrui, the third-largest independent mobile phone chipmaker in the world, has been steadily growing over the past few years. By expanding internationally, it has gained recognition from leading smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, Lenovo, and Micromax, who have integrated its chips into their devices.
At this year’s MWC, Ziguang Zhanrui announced a strategic global partnership with Intel to accelerate 5G development. This collaboration positions Ziguang Zhanrui as a key player in China's upcoming 5G commercialization, offering a strong opportunity to capture a significant share of the high-end mobile chip market.
In addition, Ziguang Zhanrui joined China Mobile’s “5G Terminal Pioneer Program,†aiming to launch the first batch of 5G terminals quickly. The company will focus on research, application scenarios, product innovation, and demonstrations, working closely with China Mobile to build a mature 5G ecosystem.
Currently, Ziguang Zhanrui is an essential partner in the 5G landscape, actively participating in standardization efforts. With a dedicated R&D team of hundreds, the company is making substantial investments in 5G technology. It aims to become a top-tier global 5G chip supplier, with plans to release its first commercial 5G mobile platform by mid-2019.
Wu Huixiong, Senior Vice President of Ziguang Zhanrui Market, emphasized that the company will focus on two main areas: 5G and IoT. "5G represents a strategic opportunity for us," he said. "We aim to rapidly increase our market share in China’s 5G market and become a key player in domestic 5G infrastructure."
Regarding the partnership with Intel, Wu highlighted three key aspects: high-end positioning, global market reach, and long-term cooperation. "Our ultimate goal is to be the leading mobile chip provider," he added. "By collaborating with Intel in 5G, we aim to dominate the high-end market while leveraging our own solutions for the low-end segment."
When asked why they chose Intel, Wu explained that long-term stability and mutual growth are crucial. "The market changes fast, and we need reliable partners who can grow with us," he said. "Ziguang Zhanrui is committed to being a long-term, trustworthy collaborator in the 5G space."
Despite the challenges—high technical barriers, intense competition, and rising customer expectations—Ziguang Zhanrui has built eight independent product lines, each focused on excellence and benchmarking against industry leaders. "Product competitiveness is the core of our success," Wu said. "It starts with meeting market demands in terms of performance and quality, followed by the ability to sustain long-term investment."
As a Chinese chipmaker, Ziguang Zhanrui remains focused on the domestic market. "We are a Chinese company, and as the mobile industry in China continues to grow, so will our market opportunities," Wu concluded.
