When it comes to consumer-grade peripherals designed for two-wheel racing, options are extremely limited. While there are numerous cycling games available, most lack realistic control due to their optimization for traditional gamepads. Without specialized input devices, achieving an authentic bike simulation experience remains challenging.
Simulating a bicycle's dynamics is far more complex than simulating a car, especially when considering the rider's weight and positioning. In high-end 6DoF simulators like the Cruden, the interaction between the rider and the machine is intricate, requiring human tracking and powerful actuators to accurately replicate the vehicle’s behavior under various acceleration and weight transfer conditions.
LeanGP takes a more streamlined approach by focusing on tilting, making it compatible with the simplified input systems of many existing bike games. The device promises "plug-and-play" functionality for gaming hardware and supports a wide range of VR headsets, including PSVR, Vive, Rift, and even mobile VR. While PiBoSo’s GP Bike Beta and related MX bikes are compatible, they aren’t ideal for this chassis. For PSVR, only *Moto Racer 4* (2016) has shown some potential as an engaging arcade-style racer, though it still has limitations in VR support.
To fully utilize GP bikes, LeanGP needs not only to support chassis tilt but also a separate steering shaft to detect subtle reverse steering that initiates lean. The prototype currently features a fixed handlebar, but future upgrades may include more advanced components. According to the project’s stretch goals, integrating actuators and force feedback could enhance movement precision, but this depends on the success of the crowdfunding campaign. There's an urgent need for greater collaboration from both hardware and software developers to showcase the unique analog experience that LeanGP aims to deliver.
