Socionext Inc. ("Soxi Technology" or "Company"), a pioneer in advanced visual imaging SoC application technology, has unveiled the world's smallest and lightest 8K/4K media player, the "S8," featuring an 8K HEVC decoder chip developed in-house. This innovative device is set to launch in March 2018, targeting advertisers utilizing LED large screens and digital signage. With the S8 at its core, Soxi Technology aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem for 8K image encoding, transmission, decoding, and display, offering scalable solutions to support the growing demand for ultra-high-definition content.
As a global leader in 8K/60P HEVC decoding and demodulator LSIs compliant with the ISDB-S3 digital broadcasting standard, Soxi Technology has been at the forefront of 4K/8K satellite broadcasting reception since 2018. With the commercial rollout of 5G technology expected by 2020, the demand for high-resolution video content is anticipated to surge significantly.
In response, Soxi Technology has developed the S8 media player, designed to fully leverage the potential of 8K ultra-high-definition video. The S8 incorporates the company’s proprietary demodulator LSI, the SC1400A, which enables real-time decoding of 8K HEVC video. This capability allows for live broadcasts of sports events and concerts in 8K, while also supporting H.264/MPEG-4 compressed 4K content, with the ability to upscale 4K images to 8K through super-resolution processing.
To complete the 8K workflow, Soxi Technology has integrated eight of its LSIs, the MB86M31, into a real-time 8K HEVC encoding system. Combined with the S8 media player, this setup covers all essential stages of 8K image processing—encoding, transmission, decoding, and display—offering a full-service solution for 8K content delivery.
