Austriamicrosystems launches new full color LED driver

Austriamicrosystems has expanded its LED driver family with the release of the full-color LED driver AS1112. The device is ideal for full color applications such as LED video displays, LCD TV backlighting, indoor/outdoor full color LED displays and large stadium displays.

The AS1112 full-color LED driver integrates 12-bit PWM and delivers an exciting 4,096 grayscale per color and achieves up to 68 billion RGB colors. In addition, the integrated 6-bit calibration feature allows 64 levels of output current regulation to compensate for LED illumination mismatch. The AS1112 has an accuracy of ±4.5% between channels and ICs, complemented by a point correction function that completely eliminates the difference in brightness between LEDs and LED modules, significantly improving the picture quality of LED displays. The AS1112 also offers excellent performance with 2.5% line regulation and 0.5% load regulation.

Walter Moshammer, director of marketing for the Standard Linear Division of austriamicrosystems, said: "High-quality LED displays such as large stadium displays, indoor and outdoor commercial displays, and displays on public transportation vehicles require a large number of LEDs. Used in the sun, these top quality displays need to provide high color depth, high brightness, high frame rate and excellent contrast. In addition, in order to reduce maintenance costs and ensure high picture quality, LED error detection mechanism is also very important. Austriamicroelectronics The AS1112 full-color LED driver supports delay-free, 30MHz data transfer rates and an extremely fast refresh rate, designed for use in sports venues and sporting events that require fast video motion. In addition, the AS1112 can be used for dynamic point correction. The solution for LCD TV backlighting applications to produce 'adjustable' white light."

The AS1112 features 16 current regulation ports that provide LED constant current drive and support a wide range of LED forward voltages. The AS1112 output port can withstand up to 15V and can be connected in series to form a single pixel to increase brightness. Using an external resistor, the current can be adjusted from 0 to 80 mA, providing great flexibility for LED brightness control.

Another feature of the AS1112 is the built-in LED error detection. The AS1112 makes it easy to visually detect any open, short, and overtemperature faults. Comprehensive system thermal monitoring is achieved through two temperature thresholds. In order to detect an error immediately, a global error indication pin is provided. In addition, detailed error reports can be read to obtain the specific location of the fault LED. The AS1112 uses a serial data input/output line for error information readback, eliminating the need for additional PCB traces for LED error diagnostics.

The fast, 30MHz serial interface ensures a high refresh rate and is large enough to handle large LED display modules. The AS1112's power consumption is very low, while its power-down feature reduces the operating current in standby mode to 40nA. With an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, the AS1112 is ideal for industrial and outdoor applications. The IC is available in a small, thermally efficient, 32-pin TQFN (5x5mm) package for easy handling of large output power. A very dense LED pixel pitch is achieved.
