Japan's memory soaring: memory prices can not escape the same foreign

[PConline News] The surge in domestic memory prices has started to slow down. While the rate of price increase in China is currently leading globally by over 300% annually, the market has shown signs of stabilization toward the end of the year, with some prices even showing a slight downward trend. Although the overall rise hasn't been dramatic yet, the upward momentum seems to be easing up.

According to recent reports from Japan's PCWatch, a well-known hardware review site, memory prices in Akihabara have skyrocketed. DDR3 and notebook memory are also following this upward trend, with both base and average prices seeing significant increases. Some models have seen price hikes exceeding 10%, with certain products climbing even higher.

For example, DDR4-2133 16GB×2 modules are now available at a minimum price of 3,180 yen (around RMB 1,880), while the average price has reached as high as 40,071 yen (approximately RMB 2,370). This is a notable increase compared to one month ago, when the lowest and average prices were around 3,800 yen and 5,574 yen respectively—up by as much as 12% and 14%. Even higher-end DDR4-2666 modules, such as 16GB x 2 packages, have surpassed 41,000 yen, showing a small but steady increase from previous levels.

Although DDR3 memory is gradually being phased out, it is still on an upward trajectory. The price of DDR3-1600 4GB×2 has increased by about 14% compared to a month ago.

In contrast, the increase in notebook memory prices has been more moderate. However, the highest-priced DDR4-2133 4GB x 2 modules have still risen by around 10%.

High-performance memory modules are experiencing explosive price growth. One notable example is the Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-4600 8GB×2, which is expected to be priced at 71,420 yen (approximately RMB 4,220), making it one of the most expensive options on the market.

Compared to the astronomical prices seen in the domestic market, foreign memory prices are still relatively manageable. At this point, international prices haven’t surged to the same extent as they have domestically. Students or consumers looking to upgrade their systems may want to consider purchasing abroad, where the price increases are more gradual and predictable.
