Linear Technology Corporation has launched the LT3597, a 60V, 1MHz step-down DC/DC converter designed as a three-channel constant current LED driver. Each channel features an internal constant current sink and a dedicated adaptive output buck converter, ensuring high efficiency in applications like RGB displays where each LED string requires a different output voltage. At a 48V input, the LT3597 can drive up to three LED strings—each consisting of up to ten 100mA LEDs in series—with over 90% efficiency.
The multi-channel design makes the LT3597 ideal for large LED billboards and industrial, automotive, and medical display applications. Its wide input voltage range of 6V to 60V ensures versatility across various environments. Each LED string can be independently set to deliver up to 100mA of current with ±2% accuracy between channels. Additionally, True Color PWM dimming allows for a dimming ratio of up to 10,000:1 per channel.
Operating at a programmable fixed frequency from 200kHz to 1MHz, the LT3597 uses a current mode architecture to ensure stable performance under varying supply and output conditions. This also helps reduce the size of external components. The device supports synchronization to an external clock for further flexibility.
Housed in a thermally enhanced 5mm x 8mm QFN package, the LT3597 offers a compact solution for LED lighting systems. It includes three independent 400mA, 60V internal switches that provide a step-down constant current source. The internal buck converter uses an adaptive feedback loop to maintain an output voltage slightly above the required LED voltage, maximizing efficiency.
If any LED string experiences an open or shorted fault, the LT3597 continues to regulate the remaining strings and signals the FAULT pin. Additional features include temperature-based derating of LED current and disconnection during shutdown for improved reliability.
The LT3597EUHG is available in a 39-lead 5mm x 8mm QFN package, with pricing at $3.95 per unit for 1,000-piece quantities. The industrial-grade version, LT3597IUHG, is rated for operation between -40°C and 125°C and costs $4.54 per unit for the same quantity. All versions are available in stock.
