Method for realizing two-machine interconnection, using Modem to realize remote two-machine interconnection

Two-machine interconnection refers to the direct connection between two computers. This can be achieved through various methods such as network card connections, serial port connections, parallel port connections, Modem connections, infrared connections, and USB connections. In this article, we will focus on remote two-machine interconnection using a Modem.

What is a Modem?

A Modem, short for Modulator-Demodulator, is commonly known as a "modem." It is a computer hardware device that converts digital signals from a computer into analog signals suitable for transmission over a regular telephone line. On the receiving end, another modem translates these analog signals back into digital form that a computer can understand.

Computers communicate using binary data—composed of 0s and 1s—but telephone lines transmit only analog electric signals. Therefore, a Modem is essential for transmitting data between two computers via a telephone line. The process involves two key steps: modulation and demodulation.

During modulation, the computer's digital signal is converted into an analog signal that can travel over the phone line. At the receiving end, the Modem demodulates the signal, converting it back into a digital format that the receiving computer can interpret. This cycle enables remote communication between two computers.

Modems are widely used in telephone networks for data communication and play a crucial role in network interconnection and remote access. Modern Modems have advanced significantly in terms of adaptation, data compression, and modulation techniques. They can achieve data transfer rates up to 56 kbps, which is close to the theoretical maximum of a standard telephone line.

Steps to Set Up Remote Modem Interconnection

1. Install the Dial-Up Network Server on an NT Server

To set up a Modem-based remote connection, you need to install the Remote Access Service (RAS) on the server. Go to the Control Panel, select "Network," then "Network Settings," and choose "Add Software." From there, navigate to "Remote Access Service" and follow the installation instructions.

The RAS installer may ask whether to automatically detect the Modem or allow manual selection. Choose "Cancel" for manual setup or "OK" for automatic detection. Then, configure the port usage mode: "Only dial out" allows the computer to act as a client, "Receive only" makes it a server, and "Dial out and receive" allows both roles.

After setting up the port and network configuration, click "Continue" and configure the RAS network settings. You can define the access scope to include the entire network or just the RAS server. Once everything is set, restart the computer to apply the changes.

2. Install a Dial-Up Network Client on a Windows Workstation

On the client side, go to "Add/Remove Programs," then "Install Windows," and select "Communications." Choose "Dial-up Network" and complete the installation. After installation, a "Dial-Up Networking" folder will appear in My Computer.

3. Establish the Connection

To connect, open "My Computer," go to "Dial-Up Networking," and create a new connection using the "New Connection Wizard." Enter details like the name of the remote computer, modem model, area code, phone number, and country code. Once completed, a new icon will appear in the Dial-Up Networking window. Double-clicking it will establish a connection to the remote server.

Summary

Using a Modem for two-machine interconnection is a common method in government agencies and enterprises. It supports file transfers, email sending and receiving, and resource sharing. As long as a phone line is available, this method works effectively, though its speed is much slower compared to a local area network (LAN). Despite this limitation, it remains a reliable option for remote communication in areas with limited internet access.
