Texas Instruments has announced a high-brightness LED driver with a 40 V, 1.2 A integrated switch that can drive up to three 1W LEDs in series. The high performance features of the new TPS61165 device and a wide input voltage range of 3 V to 18 V allow designers to efficiently manage multiple high-power LEDs in single-cell battery-powered applications or 9V/12V bus point-of-load designs.
The TPS61165 controls the brightness of the LEDs via a digital single-wire interface or pulse width modulated signal. The digital interface can program the internal registers to set the LED current to one of 32 logarithmic step values. In addition, the converter has a variety of built-in protection features such as LED open circuit protection, soft start, over current limit and over temperature protection.
In addition to being able to drive lighting LEDs, the TPS61165 can also drive backlight LEDs to support multimedia displays up to 9 inches wide for applications such as ultra-mobile PCs, LCD photo frames, industrial laser diodes or medical and industrial lighting applications.
In addition, TI has simultaneously introduced the latest TPS61160 and TPS61161 converters that support input voltages from 3V to 18V. Both devices integrate a 0.6A current switch for portable applications and battery-powered applications with small displays such as portable gaming consoles, GPS systems, and 3-inch or 4-inch compact LCD display backlights in smartphones. technology. The TPS61160 can drive up to six LEDs and support 26V LED open circuit protection; while the TPS61161 can drive up to 10 LEDs and support 38V LED open circuit protection. As with the TPS61165, the brightness of the LED can be adjusted not only by a single-wire digital interface or PWM signal, but also by analog dimming.
