TI Introduces Two New Automotive Motor Drivers for High Performance Power System Applications

In June 2016, Texas Instruments introduced two new automotive motor drivers, the DRV8305-Q1 and UCC27211A-Q1, that support high-performance powertrain applications. The DRV8305-Q1 is a highly integrated three-phase brushless DC gate driver. The UCC27211A-Q1 is a high current half-bridge gate driver that improves system performance and provides design flexibility to meet a wide range of automotive system requirements.

The DRV8305-Q1 features an intelligent gate drive architecture with programmable slew rate control for MOSFET electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) optimization for power system applications such as drive pumps or engine cooling fans. The DRV8305-Q1 has an operating temperature range of -40 to 150 °C and meets the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC)-Q100 Class 0 automotive temperature specification. Other features and benefits are as follows:

· Start-stop support: The device's minimum operating voltage is 4.4V, which supports start-stop function, which enables automakers to meet stringent fuel efficiency and CO2 emission standards.

Reduce board space: The DRV8305-Q1 integrates a 3.3V or 5V linear regulator, three current sense amplifiers, and an intelligent gate drive architecture to reduce board size and eliminate up to 20 external components.

· Fault protection: Advanced on-chip protection with detailed troubleshooting prevents over-temperature, under-voltage lockout, simultaneous MOSFET turn-on and overcurrent.

For automotive designers seeking design flexibility, the 100-V UCC27211A-Q1 half-bridge gate driver supports both brushed and brushless DC motors. A single half-bridge design allows the gate driver to be placed near the MOSFET, minimizing parasitic inductance and simplifying overall board layout. In addition, it has the following advantages:

Leading performance: This device features the industry's fastest 15 nanosecond propagation delay, fast rise and fall times of 7 nanoseconds, and 4-A peak gate drive with high performance and package size of only 4.89mm & TImes; 3.9mm.

Robust protection: The -12V negative voltage rating of the UCC27211A-Q1 prevents the driver from being affected by potentially damaging voltages.

The DRV8305-Q1 and UCC27211A-Q1 extend TI's powerful portfolio of motor drivers to provide designers with integrated, flexible solutions for a wide range of voltage, current, interface, integration and control options.

Packaging and sales

The 9mm & TImes; 9 mmDRV8305-Q1 is available in a 48-pin thermally enhanced thin quad flat pack (HTQFP) from Texas Instruments stores and authorized dealers. The DRV8305-Q1 evaluation module enables designers to easily design and configure three-phase motor drive and control systems.

The UCC27211A-Q1 is available now in an 8-pin Small Outline Integrated Circuit (SOIC) PowerPadTM package.
