Intel Introduces 5G Communication Chip: Will Be Used in Automotive and Mobile Devices

Beijing time on January 5 morning news, Intel released the first 5G standard communication chip on Wednesday. As operators gradually introduce 5G services in the next few years, Intel hopes to occupy a certain share of the smartphone market with such chips.

Intel is expected to release a limited production of 5G modem chips in the second half of 2017. Such chips will be used in cars, home networks, and mobile devices.

In October last year, Qualcomm also released a 5G modem chip. Qualcomm also expects that the chip will start limited production in the second half of 2017.

The full launch of 5G services will take some time. The telecommunications industry is still discussing the technical specifications of 5G.

Verizon plans to launch 5G services this year, while Korean telecom operators plan to launch 5G services during the 2018 Winter Olympics. However, most operators expect that 5G services will be launched in 2020.

The modem chip manages the connection between the mobile phone and the mobile communication network, while the processor chip is responsible for the internal operations of the mobile phone, such as running a smartphone application. Both of Intel's chip products have performed poorly.

Intel's upcoming 5G modem chip is expected to deliver data rates in excess of 5 Gbps, which is about 100 times the peak rate of 4G LTE networks. In the next few years, 5G networks will be used to manage a large number of connected devices. Intel said the new product will work with current LTE modems to make the device compatible with both 4G and 5G networks.

Intel also announced its car platform on Wednesday, which includes hardware and software, and 5G connectivity is part of the platform.

Intel believes that high-speed data connections are necessary for the development of driverless cars. Driverless cars need to collect information about their surroundings and send the information back to the cloud computing platform for processing.

For Intel, modem chips are becoming a high priority product. As the PC market slows, Intel is trying to reduce its reliance on PC processors. In the past few years, Intel is vigorously exploring the smartphone market. However, due to power consumption advantages, almost all mobile phone manufacturers use ARM processors.

At the same time, Intel has not made much progress in the field of smart phone modem chips. Qualcomm is the leader in this market. However, Apple has replaced Qualcomm's modem chips with Intel chips in some iPhone 7 phones. (Zhang Fan)
