Linear Technology announces three sets of output high current LED driver controllers

Linear Technology has released a three-group output DC/DC controller, the LT3797, to drive three independent LED channels. The component's fixed frequency, current mode architecture provides constant, accurate regulation of LED current over a wide range of power and output voltages. Its 2.5V to 40V input voltage range with 60V immunity makes it suitable for automotive applications such as cold start, stop/start and load dump conditions, and a wide range of industrial applications.

Each channel of the LT3797 can drive a wide range of LED power through a boost, buck or SEPIC architecture. In a boost configuration, three LED channels up to 90V can be driven with more than 1A of LED current, with efficiencies as high as 93%, from a nominal 12V input and delivering over 250W. Each of the three channels can also operate with a separate True Color PWM signal, allowing each channel to dim up to a 3000:1 dimming ratio. Each channel provides reliable open LED and short-circuit protection in boost mode, providing the high security and reliability design required in automotive applications.

In addition, its frequency adjustment pin allows the user to set a frequency between 100kHz and 1MHz to optimize efficiency while significantly reducing external component size. Its thermally enhanced 7mm x 8mm QFN package provides a fairly compact solution for LED applications from 20W to 250W.

The LT3797 is designed to drive the LED string with the most appropriate configuration for each channel, whether boost, buck, SEPIC or a combination of the above. Its high-side current sensing allows the same or different configurations to be used for each channel, while rail-to-rail current sensing provides an output range from 0V to 100V, providing a high degree of design flexibility. Other features include overvoltage and undervoltage lockout, 20:1 analog dimming with CTRL pins, and external synchronization.

The LT3797EUKG is currently available in a thermally enhanced 52-pin 7mm x 8mm QFN package. The LT3797IUKG is tested and guaranteed to operate over the -40°C to 125°C junction temperature range, all versions are available.

  • Tamper-Resistant: Spring-loaded shutters that close off the outlets to the receptacle. This allows only the metal prongs of a plug to open the shutters and create an electrical circuit. This is an important safety function to avoid children from inserting foreign objects in your outlet such as keys or a hairpin. 
  • Weather-Resistant: Use this outlet anywhere, especially outdoors.
