On April 25, Spreadtrum announced the departure of Zou Qiuzhen, the company's chief technology officer (CTO), with unpredictable momentum. Insiders pointed out that Zou Qiuzhen was fired and related to Spreadtrum's internal struggle.
Why is this?
A Spreadtrum spokesperson declined any further comment, only saying that Spreadtrum has no plans to find someone to fill Zou Qiuzhen ’s position.
Spreadtrum acquired MobilePeak in 2011, and Zou Qiu is the CEO of MobilePeak. They focus on WCDMA solutions.
It can be seen that the acquisition of MobilePeak is mainly to get the UMTS / HSPA + solution, which is the key to Spreadtrum's internationalization strategy. In order not to be limited to China Mobile's TD-SCDMA-based market, they urgently need to expand their business scope by entering the WCDMA functional machine, smart phone and tablet PC markets.
MobilePeak's Shanghai and San Diego teams are the key to whether Spreadtrum can develop the next-generation multimode modem technology. In a recent interview with EE TImes, Spreadtrum CEO Leo Lee pointed out that the company ’s second-generation 28-nanometer process LTE solution (CAT 4) is expected to be released in the fourth quarter and will support five baseband modes (TDD -LTE, FDD-LTE, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA and EDGE).
None of this explains why Spreadtrum suddenly fired the CTO.
An industry source based in Shanghai revealed that an article appeared in China a few weeks ago that hinted at internal conflicts among Spreadtrum's engineering teams. Many former MobilePeak employees said their Pre-IPO (Initial Public Offering) stock options at MobilePeak were converted to Spreadtrum ’s stock price, which made them very dissatisfied and angered Zou.
The article also pointed out that Zou did have a private transaction with Spreadtrum, which annoyed past colleagues, including his closest confidants.
