Apple TV: It will redefine the TV box

Over the past many years, we have been expecting that Apple could redefine television. Although this company, which attaches great importance to confidentiality, declined to reveal any details, Tim Cook told me in an interview in May 2013, “For TV, we have A great vision." But in the following years, we did not see any great product.
In the past few years, Apple has been trying to create its own television service, hoping to compete with traditional cable TV, but Apple's attempts in this area have failed, at least for the time being.
At the same time, Apple has not released new products in the live video area. Apple TV has not been updated for many years. Its competitors have never been idle. Roku, Amazon, and Google have introduced a variety of television products. In addition, there is almost no connection between Apple TV and Apple's iOS platform.
But all this has become history, although this time Apple did not redefine TV, it did not even release a TV, but Apple released a better TV box - the new Apple TV.

I have spent some time testing this new Apple TV. Compared to previous products, the new Apple TV is much faster and easier to use. But this product is like Apple's first step in a new direction. Some features of the new Apple TV (such as voice control) just catch up with its competitors, and some features will have a lot of use in use. limitation.
The new version of Apple TV is priced from $69 to $149 (32GB, $199 for 64GB), but there are two major features that make this generation of Apple TV unique.
Join the iOS family First, Apple TV has finally joined Apple's huge App ecosystem. Apple TV is equipped with iOS-based tvOS, and it also has its own app store. Apple said that Apple TV will have hundreds of apps when it is officially launched, including live video apps such as Netflix and Hulu, games, and apps that are very popular on iPhones and iPads like Gilt, Zillow, and Airbub.
Compared to other TV boxes, Apple TV based on iOS can provide more features. In fact, the new Apple TV is somewhat like an iPhone or iPad developed for television, and it provides a platform for apps used in the living room.
Cool remote control

In addition, Apple TV is equipped with a brand-new remote control that has a glass-like touchpad on a Mac. The user can also activate Siri directly on the remote control. When searching for TV shows and movies, Siri recognizes it. The rate is very good. Most of the time, Apple TV's remote control can directly control the volume of the TV without any settings. After a simple setup, this remote control can also directly switch some models of TVs.
There is a home button on the remote, but there is no physical button for fast-forward or rewind, users can fast forward and rewind the video by sliding on the glass touchpad.
When Siri hits TV
Siri can not only search Apple's own iTunes resources, but also search for resources within third-party apps such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime.
If I tell Siri the fourth quarter of the "White House", Siri will also provide me with resources from iTunes and Netflix. It will also display a list of episodes and casts for this season. Siri is also getting smarter if you don’t remember the name “When Harry hits Sally” but remember the actors in the movie, you can ask Siri: “What movies did Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan shoot?”, Siri A list of movies will be given. Siri can understand some of the more complicated issues. If I say to Siri that I want to see the fate of “The Deadly Addict”, Siri will play the last episode of “The Deadly Addict”.

Of course, you can also ask Siri questions like the iPhone, asking for weather, game scores, or stock prices. Siri can also play back video. You can tell Siri to skip the first three minutes of the movie or to "pause the show."
My favorite is Siri’s smart review feature. If you don’t hear a certain conversation in the video, you can ask Siri: “He(she) just said you?”, Apple TV will put the playing video Play back 15 seconds.
Apple is the last of the major TV box manufacturers to add voice control. After comparing Roku 4 and Amazon's Fire TV, I think Apple TV's voice control is better. However, I hope Apple TV's cross-app voice search can support more apps, especially YouTube.
An imperfect box The new Apple TV also has some drawbacks. One big problem is that it does not support 4K. In contrast, the cheaper Roku 4 and Amazon Fire TV already support 4K. I personally don't think there is any problem with not supporting 4K, at least for now. On my own 43-inch 4K TV, watching from a distance of eight feet (about 2.66 meters) from the TV, Apple TV looks like no difference between Roku and Amazon's 4K video, and there are not many 4K sources available at the moment. Watching, but the lack of 4K may displease some video enthusiasts.
Compared to not supporting 4K, I find it even more annoying that the new Apple TV is unable to restore the apps and settings on the old Apple TV. If you previously marked your favorite channel on the old Apple TV, you will need to remark once on the new Apple TV. The new version of Apple TV is currently the only iOS device that cannot be restored. Apple told me that because the new Apple TV is the first TV box to carry iOS, there is no backup for recovery, and hints that the future of Apple TV may incorporate the ability to restore the backup.
Another disappointment on Apple TV is the inability to use Siri search on the App Store, and Apple TV's particularly difficult to use built-in keyboard. The App Store search program on Apple TV is an extremely painful thing. In addition, because of the difficult keyboard, it is very annoying to enter the account name and password, but fortunately, you only need to enter once, Apple TV will remember the user name and password you have entered, and it will be filled automatically next time.
Although Siri has become better, it often feels like Siri is very limited. Siri should work on most apps, not just a few apps like now. Siri doesn't even support Apple Music, and it's curious that some of the features that Siri has on the iPhone are on Apple TV. Instead, it cannot be achieved.

I do not know if Apple will redefine television in the future, but at least for now, they have not yet done so. But if I want to buy a TV box, I will choose the new Apple TV. By merging the TV box into the vast iOS ecosystem, Apple has given Apple TV a broader vision, which Roku and Amazon cannot match.
In fact, although TV cannot be redefined, Apple TV has redefined the TV box.
