21ic News Silicon Labs has announced the industry's most cost-effective, voice-enabled ZigBee remote control solution. This complete reference design solution significantly reduces the high cost external hardware typically required by implementing high quality software-based audio codecs in single-chip wireless SoCs. The new software codec is a key part of Silicon Labs' small-scale reference design for voice-enabled, ZigBee-based and proprietary-based remote controls for TV, set-top box (STB), and OTT (Over-the-) Top) Boxes and connected home products bring powerful voice control.

As many of the "devices" of IoT become more intelligent and connectable, it becomes more and more difficult to incorporate richer user interfaces into smaller devices. Voice Enable is changing the way we control and operate connectable devices by providing an easier, hands-free way to search, browse, and experience content and services. Combined with powerful Voice-over-RF technology and cloud-based speech recognition technology, the voice-enabled remote control frees people from traditional infrared (IR) remote controls that are constrained by sight and buttons. Silicon Labs' innovative speech codec technology and complete reference design simplify the process of designing a truly intelligent remote.

Silicon Labs' new ZigBee Remote Control (ZRC) reference design provides all the hardware and software needed to develop a full-featured, voice-enabled remote. Based on Silicon Labs' EM34x wireless SoC and ZRC 2.0 Gold Unit certified software stacks, this reference design provides an industry-standard approach to interoperable, low-power RF remotes. The reference design includes a complete RF layout and design file, an acceleration sensor for backlight control, a buzzer for find me looking for remote control functions, support for IR control, a digital microphone, and the ability to transmit voice commands over RF.

The reference design built by Silicon Labs supports voice control, whether using an external hardware codec or the company's software codec technology. The hardware codec reduces the EM34x SoC processing load, while the software codec increases the CPU load while achieving minimal bill of materials (BOM) costs. Both design options meet the stringent voice quality requirements of leading providers of cloud-based speech recognition software.

Daniel Cooley, vice president of product marketing at Silicon Labs IoT, said: "As a leading provider of ZigBee chips and software solutions for the IoT space, Silicon Labs has successfully helped thousands of wireless developers simplify and accelerate their RF designs. The growing trend of voice control in the home is exciting, and we have developed a complete reference design that can reduce the cost and complexity of building a voice-enabled ZigBee remote for a variety of connected home products."

Two new Silicon Labs development kits are available now for voice-enabled reference designs:

· EM34X-VREVK Voice Remote Evaluation Kit: This basic kit features pre-programmed devices and a simple GUI that demonstrates remote control capabilities including RF, voice commands and traditional IR.

· EM34X-VRDK Voice Remote Development Kit: Provides an “out-of-the-box” design experience that simplifies the development of remote and target devices, with EM34x voice-enabled remote control, USB flash drive, EM34x Development board, EM34x wireless module and ISA3 debug adapter.

Silicon Labs' EM34x wireless SoC is the heart of the reference design and handles all remote control functions. The EM34x SoC delivers unparalleled performance, low power and code density, and features a single-chip design based on the industry's best-selling ZigBee mesh network SoC architecture. The SoC integrates a 2.4GHz IEEE 802.15.4 transceiver, ARM® Cortex®-M3 processor, flash memory, RAM and peripherals. The transceiver's efficient architecture provides a 110dB link budget and provides reliable connectivity for ZRC applications without an external power amplifier (PA) or low noise amplifier (LNA). The integrated receive channel filter and multi-level retry capability support coexistence with other 2.4 GHz standards such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices.

Silicon Labs' complete wireless development tools provide the fastest path to developing ZRC-certified remote control products. The AppBuilder tool enables developers to configure remote control applications such as keyboard drivers, LEDs, acceleration sensing and voice control using a suite of easy-to-use plug-ins that support key features. Silicon Labs also offers the Desktop Network Analyzer, which is not a traditional wireless sniffer, but provides a complete view of all wireless network activity by using the packet tracking port on the EM34x wireless SoC.

Price and availability

Silicon Labs' ZigBee Remote Control Development Kit is available now. The EM34X-VREVK Voice Remote Evaluation Kit is priced at $249. The EM34X-VRDK Voice Remote Development Kit is priced at $399. Silicon Labs' EM34x SoC is in volume production and is sampling, starting at $1.68 for a 10,000-piece purchase. Software development tools and ZRC 2.0 certified software are available to developers free of charge. Developers can download software codecs from Silicon Labs' ZigBee remote control portal.

The Fan Motor – an important component in industrial facilities.
Fans and their motors have become indispensable in modern industrial plants. Whether for ventilation of warehouses, cold stores for cooling or just for fresh air – fan motors are everywhere. The various fans available hardly differ in terms of function, but rather in their area and in the area of use. It is easy to recognize that a fan for cooling must meet other requirements as a fan for air-conditioning systems. Further attention should be paid to the control and energy efficiency. For new regulations, for example by frequency inverters, the energy consumption is reduced, and the life of the fan motors is also prolonged.
