Development of Gigabit Ethernet Controller Based on Xilinx FPGA

First, Gigabit Ethernet technology introduction

Ethernet technology is today's widely used network technology. Gigabit Ethernet technology inherits many of the advantages of previous Ethernet technology, and has many new features, such as transmission media including fiber and copper, using 8B/10B codec. The scheme uses carrier extension and packet burst technology. Because of its good inheritance and many excellent new features, Gigabit Ethernet has become the mainstream solution for the current LAN.

Gigabit Ethernet utilizes all the technical specifications specified by the original Ethernet standard, including CSMA/CD protocol, Ethernet frame, full-duplex, flow control, and management objects defined in the IEEE 802.3 standard. The key technology of Gigabit Ethernet is the implementation of Gigabit Ethernet Layer 2 (MAC layer) switching and Ethernet interfaces. With the popularity of multimedia applications, Gigabit Ethernet will become the main force of various Ethernet technologies.

Second, Xilinx's Gigabit Ethernet solution

1) IP support

Xilinx offers a LogiCORE solution with a parameterizable 10/1Gbps Ethernet media access controller capability. The core is designed to work with the latest Virtex-5, Virtex-4 and Virtex-II Pro platform FPGAs and can be seamlessly integrated into the Xilinx design flow. The Gigabit Ethernet Media Access Controller Core (GEMAC) is a parameterizable LogiCORE IP solution for 1Gb/s (Gbps) Ethernet media access controller functions. The GEMAC core is designed to comply with the IEEE 802.3-2002 specification. The GWMAC core supports two PHY-side interface options: GMII or RGMII. And, Xilinx's comprehensive 1Gb/s Ethernet solution includes Gigabit MAC and PCS/PMA IP core products. The Xilinx Gigabit Ethernet MAC solution also includes a configuration with a built-in processor local bus (PLB) interface (PLB GEMAC). This configuration is provided through the Xilinx Embedded Development Kit (EDK). GEMAC LogiCORE IP enables seamless integration with 1000 Base-X PCS/PMA or SGMII cores and offers three options for interfacing with PHY devices: 1000 BASE-X or 10-bit interface (TBI) or SGMII.

The GEMAC core is ideally suited for the development of high-density Gigabit Ethernet communication and storage devices. Key features are:

Single-speed full-duplex 11 Gbps MAC controller;

Designed to comply with the IEEE 802.3-2002 specification;

Direct operation with minimal buffering to maximize the flexibility of the client interface;

Configuration and monitoring via an interface in an optional stand-alone microprocessor;

Directly interface with the Ethernet statistics core for powerful statistical data collection;

Symmetric or asymmetric optional flow control by MAC control pause frame;

Optional technical support for VLAN frames conforms to the requirements of the IEEE 802.3-2002 specification;

Support for "jumbo frames" of any length (optional);

An optional address filter with an optional number of address table inputs.

2) The corresponding development board kit

The Gigabit Ethernet development kit from Xilinx is the Virtex-5 ML505/ML506 development board (using the FPGA chip: XC5VLX50T-1FF1136), which supports 10/100 Mbps, 1/10 GHz Ethernet, plus Xilinx The ML505/506-based design provides a comprehensive reference for Ethernet-based designs. In addition, the ML505/506 also has the remaining Gigabit interfaces such as SFP, PCI E, SATA and SMA interfaces, making it an ideal platform for learning and developing high-speed connected devices.
