Fossil Q series new Android table experience wearing a mechanical watch

Tencent Digital (Compiled: Human) Fossil’s plan for 2016 was ambitious. The fashion brand had stated at the beginning of the year that it would gradually increase from its eight products to 100 wearables. Although we don’t know how much of the 100 wearables are valuable, we have to admire the plans for Fossil. This bold and aggressive strategy not only benefits the development of Fossil, but also plays a role in promoting the entire wearable device industry.

Q Marshal is one of the most representative products of Fossil's products, and it is another Q Wander's twin brother. These two smart watches are more serious in style and quite formal, and they use more traditional watches. Design style, basic wear on hands will not have too abrupt feeling.

Q Marshal sells for 295 US dollars (about 199 yuan), compared with some ordinary watches before Fossil, the price is not cheap, and Q Marshal really has the strength to prove to the user to spend more money to buy Q Marshal is Is it worth it?

design

In fact, Fossil's products have always been adhering to a simple style, the idea is not to let others see that the user is wearing a smart watch, but starting from Q Marshal, Q Marshal seems to change his style and began to try to use Android Wear operating system and not the design style of traditional watches. So this Fossil is definitely in line with the aesthetic of Android Wear smart watch enthusiasts.

From a volume point of view, Q Marshal is called a monster level, its dial directly reached 45 mm, thickness of 14 mm, but compared with last year's Q Founder, is still a little bit smaller. So if your wrist is fine, then Q Marshal is not suitable for you, so Q Marshal is more suitable for those who look strong. In addition, Q Marshal's gear style border makes Q Marshal look rougher, plus the crown disguised as a button makes Q Marshal look full of masculinity.

More importantly, at first glance, Q Marshal still belongs to the style of ordinary smart watches, and there is not much technical element. Of course, a design like the Samsung Gear S3 can have an IP68 waterproof rating that can be worn while swimming or bathing, but I believe most people do not have the habit of bathing or swimming.

The Q Marshal we reviewed was equipped with a brown leather strap, but Q Marshal can also replace any other 22 mm standard straps, including metal and silicone. From my personal point of view, I love this brown strap, and Q Marshal has become the most beautiful Android Wear system smart watch I have seen so far. While Q Wanderer is a sister of Q Marshal, the style is softer and more feminine, so it doesn't make much sense to me personally.

Q Marshal's display performance is more general, it is equipped with a 360 × 360 resolution 1.5-inch screen, although the effect is not bad, but in the outdoor sunlight, it is somewhat difficult to see the contents of the screen. Of course, like Moto 360, Q Marshal also has “tire prints” at the bottom of the screen, and here's the sensors and ambient light sensors. In this respect, Q Marshal is slightly worse than Huawei Watch, Samsung Gear S3 or Ticwatch 2.

It should be noted that many manufacturers have already designed the ambient light sensor on the bottom of the screen in a different way, without letting the “tire mark” appear at the bottom of the screen. However, Q Marshal still adopts this approach, which disappoints us. Although this “tire print” only accounts for 10% of the screen, it sometimes looks very obvious. I hope Fossil can make improvements in its 2017 product.

characteristic

In fact, the function of Q Marshal is relatively weak, but it is still enough for the user who does not require high-value control or functional requirements. To a large extent Q Marshal copied the features of the Android Wear system, so its functionality is powerful enough to rely entirely on Google's investment in the Android Wear system.

What makes me happy is that Q Marshal is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 processor, and Q Marshal is also the first smart watch I use to check notifications without delays and stalls. The Snapdragon 2100 processor has contributed.

Click Q Marshal's crown gently, remembering that it can only be clicked and cannot be rotated. Q Marshal's crown is actually disguised as an ordinary button. Press the crown to light up the screen, and long press to access the Android Wear system's main menu interface.

As with most Android Wear system smart watches, using a darker standby interface can make the screen darker and reduce the power consumption as much as possible, so this classic dial interface is also my favorite.

Q Marshal's major regret in terms of functionality is the lack of a heart rate sensor. It should be noted that the heart rate monitoring function is now almost a standard for smart watches. However, I still think that whether this function is good or not depends on the needs of users. But it is better than not. Using a watch to monitor heart rate is more comfortable than other methods. At the same time, you can also check the static heart rate when you are not in motion.

For example Pebble 2, if you look at the time every ten minutes, then in the battery life is also a lot stronger than other smart watches.

Q Marshal provides basic motion tracking, step counts, and sleep tracking, and can choose different health platforms, including Google Fit, Apple Health, Jawbone, etc., and users can choose different platforms according to their preferences.

Q Marshal's interaction with smartphones is basically not much different from other smart watches, and there are Fossil Q applications to see more detailed content. It is worth mentioning that Q Marshal's compatibility with the App is better, and no time is wasted when pairing.

And Q Marshal itself also built Fossil Q application, we can use it to select and customize different clock interface styles.

Overall, Q Marshal is a very classic Android Wear smart watch, but this has also become a disadvantage. To know that Google's smart watch operating system has lagged far behind competitors, and many of my colleagues, even Android fans agree with me.

So we are waiting for Google to bring a comprehensive upgrade to Android Wear, but the current look is not hopeful in 2016, we look forward to next year, the emergence of the official version of Android Wear 2.0, so that Google can narrow down with competitors difference.

This is not to say that Android Wear is not good, but it has not caught up with the pace of Apple, Samsung and other competitors, so Android Wear smart watches are not hot in the current market, it is not the reason for the dollar.

Lifetime

Fossil promised that Q Marshal's battery life is 24 hours, and Q Marshal insisted for a day and a half when I reduced the intensity of use. Although this achievement is not the best in the field of smart watches, it is basically what I expected. in. Because almost no one wears a watch to sleep, Q Marshal can be placed on the bedside for charging at night, so over a day's battery life will not affect the user's use.

Fossil has equipped Q Marshal with a magnetic charging base, which is somewhat similar to the Apple Watch, and this design is relatively easy to handle.

to sum up

The huge size and rough style make Q Marshal the best Android Wear smart watch on the market. However, the lack of screen brightness and the design of tire printing have all become Q Marshal's shortcomings. Overall, however, this is a product that represents the highest level in the Android Wear camp. It is satisfying, but it lacks surprises.
