LED backlights are 88% popular in laptops


The use of LED backlights in liquid crystal panels, in addition to TV panels, has also rapidly developed in notebook panels and LCD panels. Among the applications of large-screen LCD panels, the earliest popularization of LED backlight panels is notebook computers. With the improvement of LED luminous efficiency and low price, in addition to the high value-added mobile personal computers originally equipped with LED backlights, almost all models of small notebooks (with screen sizes less than 10.2 inches) will be available after 2008. They are all equipped with LED backlights. Moreover, since the first half of 2009, the main products of notebook computers with screen sizes of 15.6 inches and 14 inches have been rapidly promoted. The supply of notebooks (including small notebooks) in 2010 is expected to be 214 million units, which is estimated to be equivalent to 88% of the 188 million units that will use LED backlight panels.



On the other hand, in 2009, liquid crystal displays were preferred to use panels that reduce the number of CCFLs (cold cathode tubes) compared to LEDs. Therefore, 2010 will be a year in which LED backlight panels are fully popular. In 2010, the supply of LCD monitors was forecast to be 117 million units, equivalent to 15% of the 26 million units expected to use LED backlight panels. The LED backlight in the notebook panel is roughly divided into a Wedge Type and a Flat Type according to the shape of the Light Guide Plate (LGP: Light Guide Plate). The wedge uses a wedge-shaped light guide as it literally means. Since the components, shape and panel construction of the components are close to the CCFL backlight panel, the currently cheaper LED backlights are the main products. The premium (increase) relative to the CCFL backlight panel is $2 to $3. The flat plate shape is a product using a thin plate-shaped light guide plate. Since the LED is also a thin product, the thickness of the entire panel can be suppressed. The premium to the CCFL backlight panel is $5 to $10. With the improvement of the yield and the low price in the future, it is expected that the light guide plate will gradually transition to the flat shape.

The LED backlights in the display panel are used from low-cost models such as 18.5 inches. The LED backlight of the display panel is currently at a premium of $2 to $6, but since the inverter circuit used in the CCFL backlight mode is not required, it can eventually be offset. Moreover, due to the expansion of the use of LEDs in small-screen televisions using display panels, LED backlights have been used since the model of small screens. In addition, in some business applications such as images, since the color expression and life characteristics are different from those of the CCFL panel, TV manufacturers who have suspended the LED backlight panel are also widely available.



Although the supply of LED backlights has expanded rapidly, the time has come short and there is no accumulation of design techniques and experience in the use of components. In the case of LED luminous efficiency and basic performance improvement, panel makers and TV manufacturers have more room for additional value added.
